Investment in the public sector fell to its lowest level as a proportion of national income since World War II during the three years after Labour's election victory in 1997 according to an Institute for Fiscal Studies report out this week. www. ifs. org. uk lCloser links between local authorities and the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) were forged this week with SRA's publication of a new policy statement designed to link land use and transport planning. The statement sets out how the SRA will work with planners to promote and develop the railway and lands close to it.

Transport minister David Jamieson has changed the preferred route for the £15M A47 bypass at Thorney in Peterborough this week. The line of the bypass will closely follow the northern route previously decided in 1981, but will be dual carriageway throughout.
