Construction minister Brian Wilson has urged the industry to get behind National Construction Week 2001, calling for as many extra events and activities as possible to be added between now and the start on 15 October.

Alfred McAlpine has won a four year highways maintenance contract for Southend-on-Sea Borough Council. The £24M contract will cover 434km of roads, street lighting and new roadworks schemes London's rubbish filled canals are to be cleared by a new dredger nicknamed the Swiss Army Knife. With unfolding tools, the specialist craft is the only one of its kind in the country and can clean up canals five times more quickly than conventional boats.

Transport for London (TfL) Street Management has awarded Fitzpatrick the preliminary contract to carry out works ahead of the World Squares for All project to pedestrianise Trafalgar Square. Work includes traffic management, materials procurement and construction programming.
