An earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter Scale hit the northern Japanese Island of Hokkaido. Despite its strength most structures suffered only superficial damage. A less powerful tremor measuring 5.8 struck an hour later. More than 400 people were injured and there was one fatality.
