Rail industry body the Railway Forum has played down fears of a funding crisis in rail, after Strategic Rail Authority chief executive Richard Bowker told the Railway Passengers' Council that some of existing projects will have be 'deferred or descoped' because of rising costs. The SRA is to publish a new strategic plan in January.

The US National Transportation & Safety Board (NTSB) has yet to establish the cause of the derailment that triggered a major tunnel fire in Baltimore last summer (NCE 26 July 2001). The NTSB has established the point of origin as a punctured tank car of tri-propylene, but investigations into the cause of the initial derailment are ongoing.

A study by consultant Steer Davies Gleave this week presented a 'shopping list' for improving London's roads. The report called Getting the best from London's roads was carried out for business lobbyist London First this week.
