Balfour Beatty has been appointed by Defence Estates as preferred bidder for the £37M prime contract at Baker Barracks, Thorney Island and McMullen in Hampshire. The project involves the phased demolition, refurbishment and reconstruction of 384 bed spaces for officers and ranks.

Hazards facing road workers are to be featured in a television advertisement to run nationwide from mid November on cable and terrestrial channels. Launched at the Motor Show in Birmingham by former racing ace Sir Jackie Stewart, the commercial aims to reduce the 1:1000 chance workers have of dying on roadworks.

The government's Quality Mark scheme intended to stamp out cowboy builders now has 250 members. Another 349 applications are being processed.
