British Waterways is to reinvest a record £224M in waterway improvements it announced last week. By the end of this year 352km of waterways will have been restored and reopened.

Irish transport minister Seamus Brennan plans to raise £1.3bn from private companies to plug a shortfall in the government's road building programme. The government is exploring road leasing and bond-raising options which would be in addition to private finance and PPP proposals already contained in the country's National Development Plan. Plans to get airport operator Aer Rianta to partfund a proposed airport rail link to the city centre have been greeted coolly.

Two of materials company RMC's offices in Germany were last week visited by representatives of the German Federal Cartel Office, as part of a wide ranging investigation into anti-competitive practices in the German cement industry.

The investigation covered several other companies.
