Construction minister Brian Wilson last week called for local authorities to use environmentally friendly design wherever possible, as he opened a new 'green' school in Durham. The Catchgate Primary school features a wind-turbine generator and rainwater harvesting.

A survey by the Institute of Directors has highlighted the concerns that many businesses have with government transport policy. Of those surveyed 70% believed extra road capacity was needed to reduce congestion, 87% felt fuel duty failed to account for rural and urban vehicle use, and 73% thought congestion charging was a good idea.

Highways Agency chief executive Tim Matthews has opened the Polegate bypass, near Eastbourne in East Sussex. The bypass cost £17.2M to build and is the first of 53 major improvements due to be completed across the UK by 2007.
