The Association of Building Engineers has announced that Professor Kuldeep S Virdi has won its Fire Safety Award for his research and analysis of structures that have been subjected to blasts and impacts that can lead to progressive collapse. Professor Virdi is director of the Engineering Structures Research Centre at City University London.

Home secretary David Blunkett is this week meeting French ministers to discuss the ongoing problem of illegal immigrants entering the UK via the Channel Tunnel. Rail freight company English Welsh & Scottish Railways claims that since November 2001 only 39% of normal Channel Tunnel rail freight services have operated because of the problem.
