Contractor Carillion was waiting for a weather window to begin jacking operations on the troubled Glasgow Science Centre tower as NCE went to press. Main bearing failure lead to closure of the unique 105m tall rotating structure in March (NCE 7 March). Jacks are in place in the foundation pit and operations to raise the entire structure up 20mm will begin as soon as winds drop, a Carillion spokesman said on Tuesday.

Consultant Arup has won two major commissions as part of the Crossrail line 1 project. One is to redesign Stratford Station, while the second is to review the 25 surface stations for upgrade requirements to accommodate the Crossrail trains.

Two giant Liebherr cranes will next week be used to construct Lincolnshire's first wind turbines for green electric company Ecotricity. The turbines at Mablethorpe will provide electricity for 1,107 homes in the area.
