Contractor Balfour Beatty has been appointed preferred bidder for the permanent way and electrification infrastructure contract for Thameslink 2000, estimated to be worth £200M. Under the deal, Balfour Beatty will be responsible for overall and detailed design and installation of all track, power supplies and electrification and the assessment and strengthening of structures. Works are scheduled to begin in summer 2003, subject to the outcome of the public inquiry.
