Contractor Metronet has suspended the practice of extending the life of a rail by lifting and turning it around, on all its lines following a report into the Hammersmith derailment, published last week. Turning a worn rail exposed a corroded area in which a crack developed, eventually causing the rail to break. The report also confirms that the crack could not have been detected under current inspection regimes.
