An innovative water purification technology developed by Atkins Water has been awarded a BBC Innovation award. Pulsed microwaves are used in the process rather than traditional electric currents and allow it to outperform existing technology in many respects including operating life, size, reliability and variability. It is expected that the technology will also find its way into other applications such as food disinfection. Trials are on going and results expected by September 2003.
