Profits from Balfour Beatty's civil engineering division fell for the second year running in 2002 according to results published last week. This was largely as a result of cost overruns on United States contracts. Overall the contractor increased pretax profits from £102M to £118M on turnover up from £3bn to £3.4bn, buoyed by a strong performance in the British civils sector.
