Local highway authorities are to be put under a new statutory obligation to deal with ice on the roads, the government said this week. Cabinet Office minister Lord Macdonald said in a written parliamentary answer that a duty for a highway authority to remove ice will be introduced 'when a suitable legislative opportunity presents itself'. The move follows the chaos on roads in the south east last month (News last week).
