Widespread use of speed cameras as a road safety measure has been fully vindicated by the government, after an evaluation of eight safety camera partnership schemes showed the number of people killed or seriously injured at camera sites fell by 35% in the two year pilot. The scheme involves local authorities forming partnerships with police, magistrates courts and the Highways Agency to fund cameras. Revenue from fines is channelled back into funding more sites.
