Bangladesh escaped a second bout of flooding this month allowing floodwaters to finally recede, Bangladeshi engineers said this week. They feared that after the July floods, a second peak in rainfall due this month would have plunged the country into crisis (NCE 5/12 August). As the clean up continues, the Department for International Development has pledged £40M towards rebuilding flood damaged roads.

The European Commission is prosecuting the British government over its failure to clean up radioactive waste at Sellafield.

BAA has appointed Roger Bayliss as group construction director. He will oversee construction activity at the companies' seven airports, excluding Terminal 5. Bayliss joins from MTR Corporation in Hong Kong.
