The Environment Agency has reached the next major stage in implementing the Water Framework Directive.

It has published a series of river basin maps, which identify all the pollutants that impact on water quality in the nine river basins in England and Wales. The maps are available for consultation from the Agency's website.

Campaigners will release hundreds of balloons in Rochdale on Friday, in protest at the decision to shelve the Metrolink extension linking the town with Manchester. More than 1,200 people have signed a petition demanding the tram scheme be reinstated.

Celebrity backers include singer Lisa Stansfield and comic Jimmy Cricket.
