Vehicles towing caravans and trailers will have to stay in the nearside lane while driving on the M5 southbound between junctions 19 and 20 at certain times. The move is an experiment by the Highways Agency to see if road safety improves and congestion reduces.

Beijing authorities are looking for Western help to deliver a £3.75bn expansion of the city's subway network.

Work will involve construction of three new lines and the first phase of a fourth, which includes the Olympic branch line. The total length of the four routes is 100km and together they include 87 stations.

Public consultation has started in Hong Kong on the £1.5bn second stage of a scheme to clean up Victoria Harbour. The first stage of treatment was commissioned in 2001, but sewage generated on the northern and western sides of Hong Kong Island is still discharged virtually untreated into the harbour.
