An interim report into the condition of concrete in the main A-frame of Portsmouth's Spinnaker Tower was presented to client Portsmouth City Council this week after hammer strike tests revealed inconsistencies a fortnight ago (NCE 1 July). Spectrographic testing of concrete cores taken from the structure continues.

Bidders for Italy's 3.3km main span Messina Bridge have been given an extra two months to put together their tenders. Concessionaire Stretto di Messina has bowed to industry demand and extended the bid deadline from Tuesday this week to 15 September.

Consultant Arup has won the detailed design contract for China's first subsea tunnel, connecting Xiamen Island to the mainland. Design is being carried out with local consultants. The 6km crossing will have two horseshoe-crosssection running tunnels carrying three-lane carriageways, plus a central service tunnel. These will be excavated in granite using drill and blast. Client is the Road & Bridge Construction Investment Corporation of Xiamen.
