The Health & Safety Executive has this week published its report into the 1997 Pipers Row multistorey car park collapse in Wolverhampton. The research identified the lift slab technique as being susceptible to punching shear when there is concrete deterioration in the slab/column zone. It also raises concerns over the general level of robustness in existing design codes (NCE 11/25 December 2003).

ICE fellow Bob Clarke, director of communications and business development at consultant Babtie, was awarded an OBE in the Queen's New Year's honours list for services to local government.

Upton McGougan director David Upton has been appointed chairman of the Association of Consulting Engineers.
