Mike Blackburn has been appointed chairman of consultant Mott MacDonald following the retirement of Tim Thirlwall after 38 years with the firm. Blackburn has been with the group since 1974 and ran the Hong Kong company Mott Connell for three years. Keith Howells takes over from Blackburn as group managing director.

The HSE said this week that it will prosecute Nishimatsu Construction Company following a tunnel blow out in 1998. The explosion occurred during construction of the Lewisham extension to the Docklands Light Railway, creating a 22m diameter crater. Nobody was injured.
