A report setting out initial plans for New Orleans was released last month by the Bring New Orleans Back commission, a body set up by the city's mayor Ray Nagin. It states that there will be a complete levee protection system upgrade before the end of 2007. It also confirmed that some flooded neighbourhoods would be turned into parkland which will also act as flood defences. The US Army Corps of Engineers will carry out the protection work and plans to acquire the land and repair levees by June this year.
