What the papers say

British gas supplies could fall short in a severe winter according to the House of Lords European Union committee. Peers fear Britain could be vulnerable in extreme winter until supplies from Norway and the Netherlands are connected in 2007.

Former church envoy Terry Waite has joined protesters campaigning against the expansion of Stansted airport.

He warned that it could lead to the bulldozing of villages, increased noise and air pollution and 'unbroken concrete' in south east England.
