Railtrack last week admitted it had let down its freight customers and had been guilty of 'committing before understanding what it was committing to'. Acting head of freight Barbara Barnes promised there would be change and the service would improve. Speaking at a conference in London, sponsored by the Rail Freight Group, Barnes said Railtrack realised the present structure was not right, and it needs to simplify and change its culture.

She pledged better timetable planning to boost freight routing and said that Railtrack would deliver 'clear engineering policy' on freight issues.
