Consultant Owen Williams is teaming up with contractor John Mowlem to bid for the first round of the five-year road maintenance works being let to Managing Agent Contractors (MACs). Optimistically, the pair is calling its joint venture FirstMAC

Two young engineers working with Mouchel in its Northallerton office have won the Concrete Bridge Development Group Design Award for a bridge crossing a highway and railway. Neil Darby and David Shea were both students at Teesside Universtiy when they entered.

Contractor Murphy has been given an award by project manager Rail Link Engineering for a 250,000 hour accident free period on its £20M utilities diversion contract for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. A £500 contribution will go to a local school in Purfleet.

An urgent appeal for government, local authorities and industry to join together to reduce waste was made by Environment Agency chairman Sir John Harman at the Institute of Waste Management annual conference in Torbay. Waste in Britain is growing at 3-6% each year. Commercial waste totals 80M tonnes with an extra 70M tonnes of construction related wastes.
