NEWS IN BRIEF: Rail contractor killed

A rail contractor was this week killed when the traction unit he was in, towing five wagons of used rails crashed in to a tamping machine on the same line. The 39 year old man was working for John Mowlem & Co subsidiary UK Fastrack on the upgrade of the main Belfast to Bangor railway line, when the accident happened at 4am on Saturday. Two other men were in the cab, one of whom is still receiving hospital treatment. The line was closed to traffic at the time.
