NEWS IN BRIEF: David Blunkett

Secretary of State David Blunkett has ordered sprinkler systems to be installed in all new detention centres for asylum seekers, following the blaze at Yarl's Wood (NCE last week). Blunkett told the House of Commons that the decision not to fit sprinklers at Yarl's Wood was based on expert advice from a number of fire services. 'There was conflicting advice from different fire services about the likelihood of such an outbreak. With hindsight, and given the particular fabrics of Yarl's Wood (which uses timber frames), I believe that my predecessors would have installed sprinklers.

That is what I am intent on doing.'
