NEWS IN BRIEF: Channel Tunnel

PITTED AGAINST THE CLOCK: Hundreds of cubic metres of sulphurous smelling black Thames estuarine mud are currently being removed between diaphragm walls in a tunnel starter pit for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link's Thames crossing near Dartford. Amec/Spie has a £20M subcontract with Hochtief/Murphy for the pit and a 700m cut and cover approach for the tunnel on the river's south side as well as a similar 400m long north side approach.

The pit area must be ready in March for delivery of the first section of a Herrenknecht slurry head soft ground TBM which will make the first of two 2.5km long 8.15m diameter main drives.

A second machine head will be prepared on the south bank for the other bore, using the same back up train which will be brought back across the river.
