New offshore wind turbine testing facility completed

Contractor Shepherd Construction has completed a new Blade Test Facility for research centre National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec) in Blyth, Northumberland this week.

Shepherd has completed a 5,700m² steel frame structure to house the new testing facility. It is part of an £80M investment to accelerate testing of offshore wind technologies.

“This is a unique facility which can accommodate the largest blades being developed for the offshore wind industry,” said Narec chief executive officer Andrew Mill. “Narec will now commission the new facility ready for commercial operations at the start of next year.”
