New research is to examine the resilience of buildings and infrastructure in the face of a growing threat from climate change.
The BRE Trust has announced a three-year funding programme for Resilient Built Environment themed research. It follows earlier research which showed that there are gaps in knowledge about the impact of flooding, wind and overheating on buildings.
BRE Group board director for research and innovation Guy Hammersley said: “Last year’s devastating floods and storms revealed our vulnerability to extreme weather and were indicative of wider resilience problems. Our built environment is struggling to cope with a rapidly changing world, and there is an urgent need to strengthen its resistance to short-term shocks and long-term change – and to improve its ability to quickly recover from crises.”
The work will initially look at five different areas. These are:
- A project to develop standards for flood resilient repairs and a technical guide for contractors to support their work on this.
- Wind loading on buildings. According to BRE, more that 90% of building wind damage is at wind speeds below the basic design wind pressure.
- A project to provide guidance on minimising the risk of flats overheating.
- A project building on BRE Trust and IFRC (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) funded work to develop the QSAND Tool for post disaster reconstruction/redevelopment projects.
- Preperation work to develop a tool for assessing and managing community resilience to the impact of climate change on buildings.
