Network Rail to save £38M from innovative ideas drive

Six months after Network Rail launched its innovation portal, the firm has revealed some of the 600 plus submissions which it hopes will save £38M in efficiency savings by 2014.

Innovations Network Rail will be implementing include using a camera which can spot defects on overhead rail wires 8.2m above the operators head.

Another significant innovation is using shallower, cast-in housing sleepers on the Thameslink project which has saved £4M.

Network Rail engineering director Steve Yianni said the response has been fantastic and is keen to hear from all sectors.
