Training body CITB-ConstructionSkills training arm the National Construction College (NCC) has announced the start of work on a project to redevelop its East Campus in Bircham Newton, Norfolk.
The project started last week with the construction of two new learner accommodation blocks of 80 en-suite rooms and an onsite energy centre housing a sustainable biomass boiler that will power the new buildings.
This first £5.2M phase of the redevelopment will be completed in summer 2012. If funding can secured to carry out further redevelopment in the future, NCC plans to build an additional learner accommodation block, a youth welfare block, a sports facility, a “Constructionarium” offering hands-on construction experience for students and young professionals), and refurbished learner and visitor accommodation.
The NCC East Campus will be the national specialist hub for the National Skills Academy for Construction (NSAfC). Some £1.7M of funding for Phase 1 has been secured from the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), £1.7M from the Skills Funding Agency, and the £1.8M remainder from CITB-ConstructionSkills. Contractor Morgan Sindall is delivering the build programme.
