Names & faces

Stephen Glaister is to leave the London School of Economics to join the civil engineering department of Imperial College, London as professor of transport and infrastructure on 1 October. He replaces ICE past president Tony Ridley (F), who became head of the department last spring. Breaking from tradition at Imperial, Glaister will focus his teaching away from engineering, concentrating instead on the economic and public policy impacts of design.

David Fison (F) is to quit his role as managing director of Balfour Beatty Rail at the start of September to join Kvrner Construction as executive vice president. At Kvrner he will look after the firm's main contracting activities in the UK and abroad. Fison was in charge of Balfour Beatty's work on the Heathrow Express project before transferring to head up the firm's newly created rail division in 1996. Jim Cohen takes responsibility for BB's rail division, in addition to his existing role running the capital projects division.

Colin Shepherd, former chairman of the York-based Shepherd Building Group, has died aged 70 on the day that he retired from the family business for which he worked and helped to grow during his 50 years service.
