Nigel Temple (F) manages Pell Frischmann's North West office as regional director. John Land (M) is technical director responsible for construction, contract and maintenance management. Hugh Balfour (F) is principal technical director responsible for water and environment.

Martin Fletcher (M) joins consultant The Project Centre as head of corporate management.

Hugh Woodrow (F), former chief executive of the Association of Consulting Engineers, has been invited to become an honorary member.

George McKechnie Thomson (M), former chief civil engineer to the National Coal Board, has died aged 88. Following the Aberfan tragedy in October 1966, he was responsible for a programme of research into spoil heap construction and eventually published a code of practice on the subject.

Damian Arnold joins New Civil Engineer this week as ICE News reporter. After gaining a BA in modern history from University College London, Arnold secured a postgraduate diploma in magazine journalism from Cardiff University. He has worked on the Catholic Herald and joins NCE from AB Publishing where he was editing Network and Translink, the i- house and external publications of the Highways Agency.
