Names & faces

Dr Robert Mair (F) has been appointed to the prestigious position of professor of geotechnical engineering at Cambridge University. He takes over the role from Professor Andrew Schofield (F) who retires in October 1998. Mair will continue as a director of the Geotechnical Consulting Group, working part time in its London office.

Marie-Noelle Barton, manager of the Engineering Councils Women into Science & Engineering campaign, receives an honorary Doctor of Technology from Staffordshire University.

Colin Cotter (M) is director of civil engineering at the College of Railway Technology in Derby.
