Professor Barry Clarke (F) of Newcastle University has been appointed chairman of the British Geotechnical Society from 2001 to 2003.

John Johnson (F), director of design and construction services at Gateshead Council, has been named Engineer of the Year 2001 by the Association of Municipal Engineers.

Thames Water's new business centre in Reading, which will form the hub of its worldwide operations, was officially opened on 25 June.

Tony Pryor, chief operating officer of Brown & Root in Europe and Africa, was appointed CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours.
