The project, named "Binergy Meer", will generate between 6.5MW initially, up to 25 MW of renewable electricity and similar amounts of renewable heat energy in the future.
Construction is expected to start September 2008 and the plant should be operational in 2009. It will have the potential to deliver between 52,000 and 200,000MWh of electricity, which will cover the needs of 15,000 to 55,000 households in Meer, Hoogstraten in the North of Belgium.
The first phase will consist of a 4MWe biogas plant that will convert 150,000 ton/year of biomass and organic waste into green electricity and heat. The biogas plant is designed to accept a wide variety of feedstock such as pig and chicken manure, food industry waste, verge cuttings and other organic materials recovered from a wide range of sources. The project will also have 2.5MWe of diesel engines fuelled by jatropha bio-oil.
Excess heat and by-products will be used to create long-term synergies with neighbouring industries. Thenergo is investigating the delivery of water, CO2 and heat to local industrial consumers, which will further boost the overall efficiency of the project, with the potential to create an almost climate neutral industrial site.
The Binergy Meer concept is based on Thenergo's Binergy Ieper and Valmass projects, both currently under construction. For these projects Thenergo has developed an integrated solution for biogas plants in close collaboration with industrial partners. The integrated process developed by Thenergo was awarded the highest "A" label for its scientific value, an important recognition of the concept engineering capabilities of Thenergo.
