MPs told to celebrate Telford

POLITICIANS were last month commanded to recognise and honour the achievements of Thomas Telford.

On 28 March Telford MP David Wright put forward an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons to celebrate Thomas Telford's 250th anniversary and his contribution to society as ICE's - rst president.

The motion read: fiThat this House celebrates the 250th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Telford; recognises that he was renowned as the father of civil engineering and the -rst president of the Institution of Civil Engineers; marvels at his skills in the design of canals, aqueducts, bridges, churches, docks and roads; and welcomes the programme of events designed to celebrate his birth by Telford and Wrekin Council. fl For more information on Thomas Telford and ICE's programme of events across the UK visit www. thomastelford250. org
