Mowlem suspended from track renewals

NETWORK RAIL this week suspended Mowlem from all track renewal contracts, expressing dissatisfaction with the quality of its work and site supervision.

The track operator has also suspended Mowlem from bidding for future track renewals.

The move follows Network Rail's decision to suspend Mowlem from a renewal job on the West Coast Main Line in January. This came after a section of track maintained by Mowlem was found to be below standard.

'The investigation found weaknesses in the management and implementation of the works and made a series of recommendations, ' said Network Rail in a statement on Tuesday.

'Network Rail also decided not to renew Mowlem's contract on the west coast which expired on 1 April'.

The Network Rail suspension will apply until Mowlem can demonstrate that it has implemented improvements it has been asked for.

A Mowlem spokeswoman said: 'Network Rail's investigation identified a few shortcomings and Mowlem has implemented a number of actions and revised procedures as a result of these findings.

'Network Rail has been advised of these actions and this has also provided the basis of an Improvement Plan which we have prepared and issued to Network Rail'.
