One of Tubelines' first jobs after the Russell Square Tube blast was to move out eight trains stuck in the tunnel between Green Park and Russell Square.
This was all on the same power circuit as the damaged trains and the power had been turned off after the blast.
The answer was to cut the circuit and restore the power south of the incident. 'We cut out a 15m section of track south of Russell Square and then turned the power back on and let the trains get driven out, ' says Peat.
The damaged train itself was made up of six carriages.
Four were unaffected by the blast, and could be towed out - as soon as the police had inspected them - using a battery powered train. 'They were taken to Cockfosters (at the northern end of the Piccadilly Line) for medical cleaning, ' says Peat.
This left just the blast carriage, and one attached to it. 'When the police had finished with the carriages we had to move them out so they could inspect the track. Just north of the site was a junction that was slightly wider (than the 3.66m tunnel) and so we towed it up there again with a battery powered train. The walls and roof had been blown outwards, and to get the carriages out of the tunnel we had to pull them back in again and fold the roof down. The carriages themselves were then wrapped in a type of large bubbled wrap, ' explains Peat.
