Hong Kong members share knowledge

ICE Hong Kong Association Graduates and Students committee (G&S) has formed a special group of the G&S dedicated to civil engineering voluntary projects.

ICE Hong Kong Association Graduates and Students committee (G&S) has formed a special group of the G&S dedicated to civil engineering voluntary projects.

In one such project last year, the ‘V-Project’ group organised a study mission to Qing Yuan, China. There they were able to learn about the process of conducting a preliminary needs assessment, and sharing basic engineering everyday-lives knowledge with farmers and schools.

The V-Project Group is now evaluating the findings from the trip and researching different options to improve the living conditions of the local people.

Villages in China face several challenges, including unsustainable sources of water supply, mismatch of water sources and water usages, inappropriate disposal of waste and low levels of understanding on the associated health impacts.

Three different areas are being considered for development including water supply systems, a wastewater treatment mechanism and a solid waste disposal scheme. A trial project in the near future will be the next step.
