Cameron backs Crossrail

David Cameron last week repeated the Conservative Party’s commitment to Crossrail.

Cameron gave his backing to Crossrail in an interview with London newspaper the Evening Standard, although he said the project must give value for money.

“I back Crossrail. I want Crossrail to go ahead. I think Crossrail has that transformational capability to make London a more effective and economically successful city,” said Cameron.

Having examined all the financial arguments surrounding the project, he now believes that Crossrail will transform London.

Although he issued his support for Crossrail, he added the warning that shadow chancellor George Osborne must give the final approval. “Everything has to pass the value-for-money test.” Mr Cameron said, “But we want it to go ahead.”

  • Value for money is the acid test now for this project, which is so important to the civil engineering sector mid-recession.

    The new (ish) client top team needs to therefore undertake a hard hitting review of the structure, management and scope of the project, given that these were developed and put in place in articifically good economic times (and thus Crossrail now risks being perceived as bloated and inefficient by a newly elected government carrying an axe), in order to ensure Crossrail is lean and ready to beneficially deliver for users and taxpayers (and political agendas).

  • I was tempted to celebrate when I saw the headline of this article, but on reflection, I'm not sure. Cameron's language of "wanting" Crossrail to go ahead, and his passing the buck to George Osborne, still leaves plenty of scope for a 'reluctant' cancellation or curtailment after the election.

    Please, please, let's all multiply the pressure on the Tories to commit, and commit now. The "transformational capacity" of Crossrail, which Cameron rightly cites, is desperately needed - and it could be taking effect even now, but it will only do so when organisations considering investing in London can be sure that any future UK government will see Crossrail through. The continued dithering and equivocating on this is costing us all.
