More teams sought for CARE Construction Challenge

CARE International is looking for teams from across the construction industry to take part in the CARE Construction Challenge on 3 July.

Taking place in the Brecon Beacons National Park, the event will raise funds to support CARE’s poverty-fighting work around the world.

Teams from every level of the construction industry will cover the distance of a marathon on foot, bike and water. Practical skills and mental agility will also be put to the test alongside physical endurance, in a raft building exercise and mystery challenges.

A team from NCE is already training for the event, along with 18 other teams - including from Balfour Beatty, Bam Nuttall, Costain, Wilmott Dixon, Union Square, Barratt David Wilson Homes, McArdle Group, LOR, CLM, Arup and Atkins.

Bam Nuttall team leader for the event Kevin McGrath is taking part because he feels the cause is so worthwhile. “The pain we will endure from this challenge is a fraction compared to the challenges faced by many people in poverty stricken countries such as Haiti, every day of the week. There is a sense of satisfaction knowing the money we raise will make a big difference to the lives of people who are less fortunate than ourselves.”

McGrath’s team are already in training. “We’re determined to give it our best shot,” he said. “Being part of this event has been great for teambuilding - it is the talk of the office at the moment and there has been good banter with the rival team based at the Olympics site, who also work for BAM Nuttall.”

CARE INTERNATIONAL

CARE helps 65M people in 70 countries find a route out of poverty, including some of the most important construction projects in the world: rebuilding homes destroyed by natural disasters; constructing schools for marginalised children; creating temporary shelter for families displaced by conflict. CARE is part of an international effort to bring relief to people in Haiti following the January earthquake, and plans to assist with reconstruction for at least five years.

TEAM SUPPORT

CARE’s in-house Challenge staff offer expert training advice and fundraising support to all participants. With 15 years’ experience in running outdoor challenges, a safe a professionally run event is guaranteed. Efforts will be rewarded with a well deserved awards dinner and post-event party.

The event is backed by IT software and consultancy supplier Union Square.
