Miner solution

Letters

I refer to Prof Lesley's letter regarding the recruitment of coal mining expertise for construction of the Thames super sewer (Letters, NCE, 26 April). I recall that when the late Michael Hoffman was chief engineer of Thames Water during construction of the London Ring Main this is just what they did.

Last week NCE also ran an article on a Glasgow to Edinburgh Maglev and I recall, some 50-odd years ago, going to Milngavie and travelling on Benny's Railplane on a trial section that had been built with a similar purpose in mind.

The coach was suspended from an overhead rail and driven by propellers.
