Connect Plus has announced ‘substantial completion’ of works to prepare the Dartford Crossing for a new era.
The consortium – which includes Balfour Beatty, Skanska and Atkins – has set the road layout approaching the River Thames in east London into its final alignment and removed the temporary 30mph speed limit.
It comes after 82 weeks of construction to remove old payment booths and install a new safety system as the flexible Dart Charge came into effect on the M25.
More than 400,000 staff hours have been worked and, since mid-June, 4,800t of tarmac has been used along with 140m3 of concrete.
Connect Plus services project manager Gareth Hopkins said: “This hugely challenging and complex project has been delivered successfully to the benefit of all Dartford Crossing users.
“Our work, including the collaborative efforts of our team of contractors, has been delivered safely and at an impressive pace. I would like to thank road users for their patience while these vital improvement works were carried out.”
Work to construct new roadside verges and install a signage gantry will continue overnight when traffic flows are lowest.
