Merger talks

Merger talks between the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Institution of Electrical Engineers and Institution of Incorporated Engineers were abandoned this week. In a statement issued by the IMechE, president Professor Chris Taylor explained that negotiations over the last nine months to form a 250,000 strong 'Institution of Engineers' had concluded that 'each Institution has an obligation and responsibility to protect the interests of its members'.

Instead, he said, the three organisations will now simply look to work more closely together in future.
