Meeting the moment

The Millennium Commission is one of 11 distributing bodies responsible for giving Lottery grants to good causes. So far 185 projects on almost 2,000 sites have received millennium grants totalling £1.236bn. The commission is also putting up £200M for a Millennium Award scheme, £20M for a festival and £200M for the Millennium Experience which has its own separate project organisation.

Millennium projects must make a substantial contribution to the community and be seen by future generations as marking a significant moment in their national or local history. The projects supported fall into five categories: investing in education, promoting science and technology, revitalising cities, supporting communities and encouraging environmental sustainability.
