Medina and Mecca


Saudi Arabia's King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz issued a decree this week calling for areas of Medina and Mecca to be modernised in an effort to prevent future stampedes like the one that killed 244 people this week. The fatalities occurred as Muslim pilgrims gathered in Jamarat to hurl stones at three 18m high stone pillars, which symbolise the devil.
