Matthew Balkham

Careers profile

Atkins recently launched a new career development initiative for graduates in their first year with the company. Matthew Balkham, who works on flood defence and navigation schemes for Atkins Water in the Peterborough office, attended the two-day workshop earlier this year, alongside graduates from all other parts of the organisation.

'It was a good opportunity to meet other new young graduates and a chance to start getting to know other people and build links between departments, ' he says.

The event included psychological profiling and exercises in communication skills, working with others and relationships with management, leading to the graduates putting together a personal development plan to indicate how they move forward. A business simulation game running throughout the two days gave the graduates experience of working as part of a team, understanding what role they would take in teams and how they make decisions and work as a group.

'It was good for me because I'd been here 12 months and could start to think a bit more about myself and what I'm doing, ' says Balkham. 'I was also glad to meet people who weren't just civil engineers; and to see how many projects are going on and how many opportunities there could be.'
