What is programme management?

Programme management was born in the 1960s on two projects, the San Francisco and Atlanta metro systems. Considerable effort was put into 'soft' issues, including environmental and community concerns, as well as to 'hard' engineering. These were also large projects, rebuilding the fabric of the city. Programme management was a response to the need to tackle hard and soft issues on a large scale.

What is the difference between programme and project management?

A project manager is responsible for the physical delivery of something. A programme manager is focused on the delivery of an outcome.

Where can you use programme management?

Programme management has been used on highways, airports, major buildings and, most recently, communications projects.

How do you source programme managers?

They are the best people we can find on a worldwide basis for the opportunity at hand. They are layered on top of staff with local knowledge.

What will be the impact of programme management on the UK market?

The industry's ability to take on projects of scale will be enhanced. In the US the construction industry has benefited from a regular flow of major projects over the last 20 years, allowing it to develop its skill base. The UK has not had the same opportunity.

It will also help the industry deal with the unprecedented pressure to improve the UK's infrastructure driven by an activist-user public. People will increasingly insist that a project realises all economic development and quality of life opportunities. Many of the 'soft' issues this raises will be new for the construction industry.
